Can smoked meat be over smoked? Yes it can! This place over smokes their meat and it's gross. Their coleslaw was soggy and had a very very bad flavor. Wish we had a good smoked meat place in castle rock but I guess that's a no. This place isn't cheap and it looks like a hole in the wall and the food tastes as good as the place looks.

Too many complainers complaining about some very stupid stuff. Let me set it straight: A former "texan" doesn't mean you are a pro BBQ connoisseur. Get over yourself. And the best BBQ is the kind that requires the least amount of sauce. BBQ is a cooking technique. Sauce is meant to enhance the smokey flavor that you get from the cooking technique. I have been searching for an authentic BBQ in Denver. Can't find anything good out here. So today when I drove past Old West while I was in Castle Rock, I went in with big hopes. The smokey flavor in the meat was exactly what I have been longing for and the meat is incredibly tender. Everything is home-made and you can definitely tell that a lot of love and care goes in to it. So what if it used to be a Taco Bell. That's the building. And people who rate based off of that are not too bright. Look past the building and try their food. Incredible.

Very tender and flavorful brisket at this family-owned establishment. I found the restaurant to be very clean, the food all homemade from scratch tasty and the staff very friendly. Owner was on site

Their breakfast burritos are the bomb! Huge and yummy and they weren't to high prices for what you get! BBQ is ok. But I'm not a huge BBQ fan. Did I mention the breakfast burritos are the bomb?

We just moved to CR, wanted to give this place a try. We were very pleased. Service from Benny was outstanding. She went above & beyond to welcome us & take care of our order. We enjoyed our brisket, pulled pork sandwiches fresh cut fries. So delicious.

Was hoping this quaint , ranch/like bbq place was going to be great . It was adequate . The picnic tables and burlap curtains give it a "home on the range" vibe . The ladies waiting on us were courteous. The restroom floor was sticky . I had the pulled pork sandwich which has a small amount of sauce. It was slightly dry and would have liked more sauce available . The homemade potato salad was just ok . I probably won't return anytime soon

Had the chicken it was outstanding... two nice pieces with bread on side so i was able to make my own sandwich only 5 bucks loved it my new BBQ spot.

Good fast food BBQ. Would've gave 4 star but they don't toast the rolls and they add the BBQ sauce on top of the brisket sandwich as opposed to a cup on the side or at all. Semi moist brisket - not disappointed. Well worth the $5 brisket sandwich. I'd return again.

Very tasty BBQ! I love their pulled pork. The tables are picnic tables, so it's rustic.

Just didn't wow me for lunch, had the tri-tip and cole slaw. Coke products.

I'm a fan. I've eaten their food a few times, all take out. I've had brisket and hot link sandwiches and every time the food has been very good. Also, I'm not sure about portion size comments from others, the sandwiches are large for the price. I think most of the sandwiches are $5-6 which is cheap compared to garbage like Quizno's and Jimmy John's. But where they excel is the breakfast burritos. I was told repeatedly that Santiago's is the place for breakfast burritos in the Rock. I respectfully disagree as Old West kicks the snot of out Santiago's. The burrito from Santiago's is a wet slimy mess and Old West offers a bigger and better tasting burrito and with the salsa they make there it's over the top.

Went in here on a whim - Randy and staff were great. The food is all made from scratch (except the beans and corn - they readily point that out). Try the Gumbo - HOT! Loved the hot links, ribs were good too. Anyway, if you are in the area, give it a try, guessing you will like it as much as I did.

This was the go-to place in Castle Rock for BBQ, but it's slipped a lot. I got the rib lunch platter to go last week and when I got back to the office, the ribs were like eating beef jerky. Dried out, tough and not fresh. I called and left a message for the owner to call me back and he didn't. I called again today and got his daughter who was argumentative. She wanted to know if I was the guy who came in and complained about the ribs. No, I wasn't. So someone else thought the ribs sucked also.. She made a point of telling me that he wasn't going to replace my meal (I hadn't asked). Guess I'm done with this place. Disappointed.

Was super excited to go but when I went it was a different story. Mediocre food at best. Not too clean. And I can tell you service goes a long way. Just wish it Had a better vibe. I may be Back to try another item.

I would describe this place as fairly average tasting barbeque. The brisket sandwich is pretty large (I'm worried about the health of folks on here saying the portions are too small hehe). The prices seem fairly reasonable to me as well. I got the lunch special which consisted of a rather large brisket sandwich, french fries, and a drink for $6. Seems like a pretty good deal to me. The fries were fresh cut and tasted good. The brisket was ok. Not terrible, but not great either. It had the smoky flavor you want, but it was a bit on the dry side. Also, the sandwich came pre-sauced which I don't much care for. I like being able to choose the sauce and amount I put on my brisket. I guess maybe pre-saucing is a Colorado thing because it has happened at other places I've eaten here. All in all, not bad though. I would probably come back for lunch again.

Wonderful Bar b que. Randy the owner take great pride in the process and results. Price is good. Place is clean and people are friendly. My husband LOVES the corn bread. I have been here many times and the food is always good. It is not a fancy chain but if you want to support your local guy here is where you do it. Peach cobbler? Yea baby!

Quality actually went down, still over priced. that was the last time i ever spend $60 on low quality food to feed 3 adults

I wasn't expecting to like the meal as much as I did; this place has little competition in the area and isn't in a large city. But it was an excellent meal. We had the 3-bone ribs and a brisket sandwich -- of which I didn't eat the bun. I wanted to sample the brisket on its own. And, for that reason, we ordered the sauce on the side in both cases. The ribs were large, juicy, had enough rub with the right amount of salt, and had a nice deep smokey flavor, all the while being fall-off-the bone tender, literally. I really liked the sauce -- although everyone has a different idea of what good sauce is. (I just don't get the vinegar sauces in the Carolinas, but then, I didn't grow up there.) I didn't find myself wishing they had another type of sauce. Theirs was just right. The brisket was not the "moist" (marbled, not-lean, fatty) brisket I greatly prefer, but I found myself eating the whole thing with the sauce, and really enjoyed it. So if you love lean brisket, I think you'll like this stuff. If I lived around here I'd be back regularly!

We were staying across the street and looking for take out. Bbq sounded great so I called to make an order at Old West (their website is great). The lady on the phone was so sweet and even joked she would wait till I was there to drop my fries so they'd be extra fresh. We ordered the brisket sandwich, pulled pork sandwich, cole slaw, fries, bbq beans and green beans. Everything was great! The bbq sandwiches really are delicious.... some of the best i've had in a long time. And the staff inside is so sweet and friendly. I was chatting with the owner about us passing through town and he was so polite and friendly. It was refreshing to step into a mom and pop bbq place that makes you happy to support small business. Some people wrote nasty things about coupons... but they even have a small sign the explains they couldn't afford the coupon deal, they are sorry, they will give you a discount. But really, the food is already very low priced. Our entire order was less than $20!!! Go here... you will be happy you went and you'll eat some fantastic home cooked barbeque :)

Friendly staff, place was clean, and lots of food for the price. Food was really good live the bbq sauce.

First, know that the ribs are beef ribs, not pork. Also, their "Texas toast" is white bread, not from Texas, and not toasted. Prices are steep for what you get. People were very friendly, though. So if you're Fred Flintstone and want your brontosaurus ribs to tip your car over, and you like buying white bread from a restaurant, be my guest. I'll be 15 minutes up the street at Hickory House!

Excellent sides. Really liked the macaroni and cheese as well as the sweet corn. Oh, and the barbecue was great. Tender, smoky but don't listen to the guy who says the sausage and peppers are really not that spicy. LOL Couple of notes. The hot links were full flavored but they are hot. If you don't say anything, they smother the meat in barbecue sauce. It is good sauce but hinds some of the flavors of the meat so order it with sauce on the side. Only complaint was that when they say 2 slices of bread, they really mean that: 2 slices of bread. Not toasted not buttered. Barbecue should come with butter toasted Texas Toast.

I thought the food was really good. I got two pork sandwiches, beans, and a soda for around $10 and it was well worth the money. I was the only person in the restaurant and only had to wait a few minutes for my food. I'll continue to go back.

Excellent BBQ and more importantly, everything is made from scratch. The meats are all smoked/slow cooked. Don't listen to the bad reviews here. They are irrelevant. One guy said the food tasted canned??? It's clearly all made fresh from scratch and I've tried just about everything. How can you not taste the difference? Another poster said is was a poor excuse for BBQ, comparing it to Kansas City BBQ. This guy knows nothing about BBQ. Every region has a different type of BBQ. You can't compare it to KC BBQ, it's a totally different style. So until they advertise KC style BBQ, don't complain. 11/18/13- Dropping review from 5 to 3 stars. My last few meals here have been mediocre at best (dry brisket) and Luke warm. Not sure if it's bad timing or another issue but at the very least food quality is now becoming inconsistent.

loved it loved it loved it. The chicken oh soooooo juicy. The Hot Links made me sweat. The corn so sweet and great. I have read the last two reviews and well I had a lot of food and it was priced right. Oh, it was so great. They help with the March of Dimes Volleyball charity and the food was great then also. I have pictures, so I can show proof the food is large and in charge..... Thank you Randy for helping out the March of Dimes.

Great BBQ Pork or Brisket sandwich lunch special with a side and a drink. I have lunch at Old West Bar B Que once a week. If your going by in the morning, try a breakfast burrito.

4/13/11 The brisket was sooo good, the sauce is awesome and the price perfect!, we bought several pounds to take to our hosts in Denver. When we got to their house, they couldn't wait to use it the next day; they had to eat some right then. They are from Texas, and beef connoisseurs, and were thrilled to learn about this place. A week later, they made a "brisket run" themselves. WARNING: The address on Park is where they store their catering trucks and stuff; we had to get directions from a passer-by to 107 Wolfensberger Road [phone 1-303-660-6340], the actual restaurant location and phone number. Note: It looks like a fast food joint; it tastes great.

Pitiful excuse for BBQ. Tasteless meat, average sauce. They claim to be "BBQ experts", but I grew up in KC, this doesn't come close.

The only place in Castle Rock for BBQ. Let me repeat that: The. Only. Place. Old West Bar B Que has been open for years and a month ago, I decided to visit. It wasn't closed yet, which was slightly surprising, so I did stop in. This old Taco Bell location has had their walls repainted but the bars giving those ordering a line to form remain. Kind of odd, but there it is. I was told by the man at the register to try the brisket, so I did, along with the green beans (cos I love me some green beans) and...probably corn with a side of bread. The first sign of problem was the bread - coming out of a store-bought loaf. I couldn't tell you the brand, but it was definitely not in-house or made in the store. The next problem I had here was that I was raised with my BBQ being made in the sauce, letting it permeate the meat and fully absoring the flavor. What I got was some meat with some sauce dribbled on top of it. Seriously? I could have made this at home. As I munched through my meager portion of my $11 meal, I found the beans to be school-lunchroom quality and the bread was stale and dry. Who forgot the twisty-tie? Honestly, this place is overpriced, and it sucks. I wish I could give this place no stars.

I have only had the breakfast burritos here and they are pretty good. 1 for 3$ or 2 for 5$, much bigger that Santiago's but not as flavor full. I need to come back and try the BBQ

Old west has a bad past from their first year open but every year since they have been getting better and better. Today I ordered the usual for the office and holy cow- AMAZING. They must be doing something different. This was top notch bar b que through and through! I was born in Georgia, lived in Alabama,Florida, and New Orleans- so I am picky about my Bar B que and I def did not expect good smoked meat here in Castle Rock. They have really knocked it out of the park. The brisket sandwich and baked beans are effing addictive. Well done guys!!!

this place still sucks. it is not good BBQ. it is never busy. I actually never see any cars there. when a restaurant is never busy, there is a reason for it - the place sucks. it is so bad we drive all the way from CR to HR to eat at Dickeys. Or we drive to Hickory House. Hickory House is ALWAYS busy and there is a reason for it....it is GREAT BBQ.

We went back and the food was terrible this time :( The people who own it are so nice, and I feel awful saying any of this.. but really. We spent 45$ there and we had food that was almost all canned (green beans, corn, etc). The cornbread was extremely dry. The mac and cheese was mush. Maybe the first time I went was a good day, and this was bad? Not sure, but I won't be going back again.

I was pretty excited to find this place....until I ate there. The first time we both got pork and beef. The pork wasn't awful but it wasn't anything to write home about. There was something very mediocre about it, as if I had just crockpotted a pork shoulder a few hours on high and slabbed some barbecue sauce on it. The beef wasn't good. The texture, the taste. Something was very wrong. I'm from Texas and this isn't how you make brisket. This is how you make garbage. I love barbecue so much, I decided to give them another chance and try and meat. The next time I order pork and a hot link. Well. Guess what I got? I got pork and barbecued chicken! Are you f**** kidding me? How the hell does anyone screw that up!? How do you confuse barbecue chicken with a damn hot link? You have to be a f***** retard. I can understand forgetting the extra pickles on a burger or the extra cheese on a pizza but how is it even possible to ask for a hot link and get a damn piece of chicken? The second time decided it for sure. The food isn't good and someone is too damn stupid to put together an order? Seriously? If you still care, the second time, my girl got pork and ribs. I believe that a McRib would be considered barbecue more so than the things this place sold.

This place makes me homesick for Texas. The sauce is soo good and the brisket is a dream. Great prices and great portions.

Used to get breakfast burritos somewhere else in town until I tried Old West. They were great! One of us couldn't have soy, so they put the ingredients in a bowl for us minus the tortilla, She said it was delicious as well. Haven't been in for B-B-Q yet, but the B Burittos get accolades!

Insanely delicious breakfast burritos 7 days a week. What else could you ask for?

  • Elaine B.

Not Good and overpriced. Ribs very very tough and dry. I was hesitant to try this place once I saw the menu prices but thought I'd give them a chance. I passed on the bread upon learning it was just white bread slices from a plastic bag. If you want ribs, go to Outback. Cheaper, better and the atmosphere is an improvement over an old Taco Bell.

I'm a huge fan of bbq and was excited to try the Old West but I was dissappointed in the skimpy portions. There's a hidden gem in Denver M&D's BBQ been around for years....consistently good food, price and big portions. The service is always friendly. It's a bit of a drive there from Castle Rock. The Old West more resembles fast food bbq where everything is made in advance, it lacked that juicy freshness. Not sure if I will go back again since the staff is not all that friendly. I think I'll drive to Denver for my bbq fix.

I've lived in Castle Rock for a few years and driven by Old West Bar B Que but never stopped to try it. I purchased an Entertainment Coupon Book and tried to use a buy one get one free coupon today with a $6.00 limit but I was told at the window that they would NOT honor it, instead they offered a 10% discount. Sadly, I did not like the idea of NOT honoring their own promotion so I drove away without trying the food and will go elsewhere when I want BBQ. Just sad that they turned away a customer to save a couple bucks and so I'm giving others the heads up on their business practice.
